Environmental Policy

Morinaga Milk's head office, research laboratories, plants, and manufacturing affiliates are operating based on the ISO 14001 environmental management system, which forms the basis of the environmental policy for the Morinaga Group.

As a food company that aims to contribute to healthy and enjoyable lifestyles through offering unique products derived from advanced milk technology, Morinaga Milk contributes to social sustainability by protecting the environment and preventing environmental pollution.

<Basic Policy>
  • 1. Set objectives for our activities for environmental protection and the prevention of environmental pollution throughout the total lifecycles of our activities, products, and services. By reviewing those goals on a regular basis, the Morinaga Group continuously improves its environmental management system.

Medium-term Environmental Goals and Achievement Status

Morinaga Milk formulated a mid-term plan in FY 2016 and made efforts to achieve the plan’s goals by FY 2018. The baseline year for indicators is FY 2013.



1.ISO 14001 system enhancement
Training of Internal Auditors, Transition to ISO 14001 in FY 2015
Aiming to improve the quality of internal auditors, standards of competence were established. One-hundred sixty people from nine business offices attended a seminar especially developed to foster auditors capable of conducting effective internal audits. A basic test for internal auditors was also conducted; 2,288 employees passed the test. The transition to ISO 14001, which began in FY 2015, was completed in October 2017. Preparations for the introduction of ISO 14001 at our branches and regional offices has begun.
2.Reduction of CO2 emissions per basic unit as a global warming countermeasure
Reduce emissions by 1% each year from the base year; up to 5% in FY 2018.
CO2 emissions fell per basic unit in FY 2017 by 1.8% compared to the base year, falling short of our goal. The main factors curbing our CO2 reduction efforts were an increase in the ratio of products with high energy consumption during production and an increase in the fixed-portion ratio of emission sources such as air-conditioning due to a decrease in production volume.
3.Reduction of industrial waste
(1) Reduction of the volume of food waste per basic unit
Reduce by 3% each year from the base year; up to 15% in FY 2018.
(2) Reduction of total waste discharge per basic unit
Reduce by 5% each year from the base year; up to 25% in FY 2018.
(3) Amount of generated waste to be landfilled
Reduce by 6% annually based on the average of actual records from FY 2013 to FY 2015; up to 30% in FY 2018. (The amount of generated waste to be landfilled shall be 680 tons or less by FY 2018.)
(1) Reduced the volume of food waste per basic unit generated in FY 2017 by 16.6% compared to the base year, realizing our goal.
(2) Reduced the volume of industrial waste per basic unit discharged in FY 2017 by 16.1% compared to the base year, falling short of our goal. Efforts were hindered by treatment facility issues such as increased maintenance frequency and longer maintenance times.
(3) Reduced the volume of waste per basic unit to be landfilled in FY 2017 by 436 tons, achieving our goal.
4.Reduction of water consumption per basic unit
Reduce by 0.2% each year from the base year, up to 1% after 5 years.
Reduced the volume of water consumption per basic unit in FY 2017 by 2.2% compared to the base year, achieving our goal.
5.Reduction of the environmental impact associated with packaging The weight of containers used in accordance with the Containers and Packaging Recycling Law in FY 2017 decreased by 2.2% over the previous year.
6.Confirmation of environmental activities and promotion of information provided to stakeholders Environmental information is provided through the Sustainability Report and CSR Data Book. From FY 2017, corporate actions were adjusted and reorganized based on the perspective of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
7.Support for biodiversity conservation Using Rainforest Alliance (RA)?certified raw materials and FSC-certified paper, Morinaga Milk sold 27 million units of products using RA-certified raw material (Mt. RAINIER Deep Espresso, Lipton Tea) (the same as previous year), 73 million pieces of FSC-certified Piknik (the same as previous year), and 112 million pieces of FSC-certified MOW (19% increase compared with the previous year). The Morinaga Group also participated in a broad-range of cleanup and reforestation activities to protect local water and other environmental resources.
